Beirut Souks

Solidere, Beirut (Lebanon)

1994

Winner of the Souk ProjectArea - 120,000m²

A ground floor area that spans 60,000m², a total area of 130,000m², and a budget of $70 million.

These were the figures that the 360 competitors from 17 countries who participated in the competition to reconstruct the souks in Downtown Beirut had to juggle.

Beirut’s souks were the commercial heart of the city and were once frequented by locals from all social and religious backgrounds. The souks were completely destroyed by fifteen years of civil war, but remained vividly alive in the memories of thousands of Lebanese.

In 1994, Solidere, the Lebanese company responsible for the development and reconstruction of Beirut Central District, declared AKK Architects, in association with Parisian firm Valode & Pistre, joint winners of the competition.
