A factory, adjacent administrative block and a separate canteen for one of the world’s leading manufacturers of tubing and casing for the oil and gas industry. Located in a district of Chengdu, the capital of Szechuan province in Southwest China.
The factory and administrative buildings were both conceived as box-like structures, clad with strips of corrugated metal, a material popular in China, and used abundantly in the industrial district of Qing Bai Jiang.
Grey reflects the color of the sky in Chengdu most of the year, and contrasts with the yellow of the sun which seldom appears.
The rhythmic, bar-coded design on the elevations and the 250m façade, which stretches along the main highway, add a touch of playfulness to a rather dull cladding material.
